An ice dam forms when heat escaping through the roof deck melts snow near the ridge, which runs down to the cold eave overhang and refreezes. The ice backs up behind the dam and forces water under the shingles — into the roof deck, into the wall cavity, and eventually into the living space. For properties where attic correction is not practical, we install self-adhering ice and water barrier membrane from the eave to a minimum of 24 inches past the interior wall line — which in Rhode Island means a minimum of 36 to 48 inches of membrane at the eave depending on the overhang width. This is required by the Rhode Island State Building Code and we do not skip it.

Properties near Narragansett Bay, Block Island Sound, and the Atlantic coast experience sustained wind speeds and gusts that exceed what standard shingle installation is designed for. The solution is a higher nail count — six nails per shingle instead of the standard four — and a shingle with a Class F or Class G wind rating. We specify impact-resistant and
wind-rated shingles on coastal Rhode Island properties as a standard practice, not as an upsell.

Triple-deckers, commercial buildings converted to residential use, and the flat or low-slope sections common on ranch houses and additions across Providence, Cranston, and Warwick require a different roofing system entirely. Asphalt shingles are not appropriate for slopes below 2:12 pitch. For these surfaces we use TPO membrane roofing — a
heat-welded single-ply membrane system that handles Rhode Island’s freeze-thaw cycling better than modified bitumen and dramatically better than the tar-and-gravel systems found on many older Rhode Island flat roofs. TPO is fully adhered or mechanically fastened to the roof deck and the seams are heat-welded, not caulked — which is why it outperforms older flat roofing systems that rely on sealants that fail in cold weather.

The vast majority of residential roofing in Rhode Island is architectural asphalt shingles—sometimes called dimensional shingles—and for most homes they represent the best balance of cost, performance, and longevity. We install GAF and CertainTeed products primarily, both of which manufacture shingles specifically engineered for high-wind and cold-climate applications.
The shingle lines we specify most often are GAF Timberline HDZ and CertainTeed Landmark, both of which carry Class A fire ratings, Class F wind ratings, and 30-year limited warranties. The HDZ designation on the Timberline line refers to the nailing zone—a wider strike zone that makes proper nail placement easier to achieve consistently, which matters because improper nail placement is one of the leading causes of premature shingle failure and void warranty claims.
For homeowners who want the longest possible service life and maximum wind resistance, we install GAF Timberline AS II—an impact-resistant shingle that carries a Class 4 impact rating and qualifies for insurance discounts with most Rhode Island homeowners’ insurance carriers. Some insurers may offer discounts for qualifying impact-resistant shingles. Homeowners should confirm eligibility and savings directly with their insurance carrier before selecting a product.
For flat and low-slope sections — pitches below 2:12 — we install 60-mil TPO membrane roofing. The 60-mil thickness is our minimum specification; 45-mil is available and cheaper but does not hold up as well to Rhode Island’s freeze-thaw cycling and the foot traffic that flat roofs in urban Rhode Island typically see from HVAC technicians and other service personnel.
TPO installations include new insulation board where the existing insulation has compressed or absorbed moisture, a fully adhered or mechanically fastened membrane, and heat-welded seams at every overlap. We do not use caulk on TPO seams — ever. Heat-welded seams on properly installed TPO are stronger than the membrane itself. Caulked seams on flat roofing in Rhode Island fail within a few winters.
Rhode Island sees a predictable storm season — nor’easters from October through April, tropical storm remnants in late summer and early fall, and occasional severe convective storms in July and August that produce localized hail and wind damage.
